On August 19th, 1883 a fashion icon by the name Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was born.  Ms. Chanel was a french designer that became one of the most important designers of the 20th century.  Her pieces ranged from chic, elegant dresses to androgynous inspired ready-to-wear.  Coco chanel’s influence on the fashion industy was so big, that Time Magazine named her one of the Top 25 Most Powerful Women of the past century.

Ms. Chanel single handedly revolutionized the fashion standard for womens wear.  Her designs were more comforable than the traditional corset worn by many women of that time.  She introduced looser fitting pieces that still highlighted a womans figure.  Like most women in the 20th century, Ms. Chanel was not born into wealth.  Before Coco became a well renowned designer, she opened up a hat boutiqe in 1910.  Her hats are still highly sought after pieces even in the 21st century.  After opening a hat shop she pursued her main dream by focusing on clothing.  Coco Chanel was the first designer to work with jersey fabric. She introduced that fabric into her line of dresses, despite it only being used in menswear.  Ms. Chanel eventually went on to extending her brand by becoming the first woman to introduce a fragrance as part of a fashion line in 1923.  The name of the first fragance launched by Chanel was called Chanel No. 5.  Despite a mild hiatus with the closing of all her shops at the beginning of World War II, The Chanel brand still held importance and poise up until their return in 1954.  In 1954 Ms. Chanel went on to debuting another first for the Chanel brand, by introducing bell-bottom pants to the fashion industry.

With many first’s in her career, as well as the introduction to an abundance of different elements that all embody the word fashion, Coco Chanel is a true icon.  January skyy is proud to leave you with this fashionable look back in history.
